This is great. Is it possible to somehow use it with keyd, as I don't use autohotkey?
On Linux, I use keyd[1] and while I understand that keyd itelf could never run on the Mac, I'd love something that could take my keyd conf and make it work (even approximately) on the Mac.

Take a look at the ultra compact layouts like Miryouku - it has six layers and home row modifiers (Shift, Ctrl, Alt, Super all as tap dance keys on home rows).

Before QMK, I used Kmonad and Keyd for getting these advanced features on any keyboard.

I haven't tried it yet, but I recently learned about this tool and have it on my list to test drive:
