What does HackerNews think of plex?

The package of IBM’s typeface, IBM Plex.

Language: CSS

#2 in Font
IBM released a typeface a couple of years ago with much marketing fan fare:

On another note, are there any notable examples of AI-generated mono-spaced programmer fonts?

Video author here -- The terminal emulator is tn5250j [0], configured to use the IBM Plex Mono [1] font. Full-screen it on a 1080p display and it really is quite pleasant! And there's something that just feels "right" about using IBM's font in this case.

The typeface is a modification of IBM Plex Mono[0][1]. I'd recognise that 'a' glyph anywhere.

Nice!

However, I prefer IBM Plex[1], and it has the advantage of being an open-source project!

I have recently re-designed my CV (15 pages down to 2) and used IBM Plex for all of it... happy so far.

Do the variations of letter glyphs have unique names? Like the curly vs simplified versions of lower case 'a' and 'g'?

I greatly prefer the simplified glyphs for programming. Like IBM's Plex.

Adobe's Source Code Pro uses curly glyphs for the normal typeface and simplified for italics, which seems backwards to me.

I can't quickly refind the customizable font project with source code, where you recompile the typeface with the options you want.

Personally I prefer IBM Plex Mono and family. https://github.com/IBM/plex
I quite like IBM Plex Mono as a programming font... https://github.com/IBM/plex would be nice if the page has a way of making suggestions of fonts to add.
usa PHP, this is false.

There are many high quality open source fonts available. For example:

https://github.com/IBM/plex

http://www.latofonts.com/lato-free-fonts/

Many foundries such as Grilli Type have free trials (https://www.grillitype.com/free_trials) and reasonable pricing for very high quality typefaces (https://www.grillitype.com/shops/gt-america <$1k for desktop + web)

This is enabling the piracy of typefaces. It takes significant skill and time to create a typeface, and creators should be paid for their work.

Instead of pirating typefaces, please see:

https://fonts.adobe.com/

Many foundries also offer trial versions of their typefaces. For example:

If you don't want to pay for a typeface, there are many very good open source options available. For example:

I concur.

I'm impressed with the number of people who think that JS on most people's webpages is a good idea. Or that any JS was necessary to announce this font. It wasn't and wasn't carried off well here (nothing for the no-JS crowd).

A far easier page to write up and one that would have looked better could have been done with nothing but HTML, CSS (demonstrating the font in real-world usage even), and perhaps some PNGs to show bitmaps of the font (useful for those who, wisely, don't load every font the page says to load).

https://github.com/IBM/plex has the free font.

This is excellent work, and all of the source files and fonts permissively licensed and available on GitHub.
