Bit of an unfortunate name collision with VSCodium https://github.com/VSCodium/vscodium which is an IDE based on VSCode and in many contexts is simply referred to as "Codium".
In their own words:

"binary releases of VS Code without MS branding/telemetry/licensing"

https://github.com/VSCodium/vscodium

or alternatively:

"VSCodium is a community-driven, freely-licensed binary distribution of Microsoft’s editor VS Code."

https://vscodium.com/

I think it is, but there is also a fork call VSCodium without the telemetry, I guess people could just pivot to that?

If someone is a purist and wants to use it to avoid lock-in - it is available at https://github.com/VSCodium/vscodium
Never liked it. Takes an age to load up, but I guess once it's launched you can keep it open, so there is that. Then there's the MS telemetry to worry about, although VSCodium[0] addresses that.
