Found this, https://github.com/odlp/bluesnooze/ looks to solve this problem.
I hate that this isn't configurable by default, but bluesnooze solved this for me: https://github.com/odlp/bluesnooze
Bluesnooze[1] mostly resolved this issue for me on MacOS. I also own the XM3s, as well as non-Apple Bluetooth earbuds (Edifier X3), neither of which support multiple devices.
>Bluesnooze prevents your sleeping Mac from connecting to Bluetooth accessories.
Regarding the Bluetooth thing, it's indeed very annoying. I've found this utility that helps: https://github.com/odlp/bluesnooze
I love this feature, but Mac is the bully in this situation. It captures the connection often even when nothing is playing and when Mac is asleep it still tries to connect and probably due to low power mode takes FOREVER for the phone to sync and realize what I actually want is to play audio from my phone not laptop...
I found this project which helps with the later problem: https://github.com/odlp/bluesnooze
