What does HackerNews think of DeDRM_tools?

DeDRM tools for ebooks

Language: Python

legal reasons? Seriously, has the DRM mafia cowed people so much? What the hell is wrong with sharing public software tools with others?

Here's one option you might try (no connection to it but it seems to be one of the most recently usable, trustworthy versions) https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools

Amazon have said that in the future if this happens again they will not remove the books from customer devices.

https://mashable.com/archive/amazon-remote-delete

> The statement, from Amazon's Drew Herdener, reads:

> These books were added to our catalog using our self-service platform by a third-party who did not have the rights to the books...When we were notified of this by the rights holder, we removed the illegal copies from our systems and from customers' devices, and refunded customers....We are changing our systems so that in the future we will not remove books from customers' devices in these circumstances.

My Kindle is jail broken because I prefere using KOReader over Amazons own reader software. But even before it was jail broken if I ever brought books from Amazon I would use the "Download book to your computer" function and then run it though the DeDRM plugin for Calibre. https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools

That way even if Amazon decide to no longer host the book (so you can't redownload them) or go back on their word about not remotely removing content I still have a DRM Free copy of the content I can put on the book. However it is a shame we as consumers have to go though these steps, our other option is to buy content from store that do not apply DRM to the books, but that as decision that is basically forced by the publishers.

Shouldn't have "bought" them in the first place. Buy physical books, or DRM-free books on sites like gumroad, or just pirate. Don't give in to the rent seeking business of pretending to sell you what you can't own. If you like your Kindle device, you can use KOReader to read epubs and reduce dependence on Amazon. If I sue the bookstore, they can't just take all the books away, but if you dispute a charge with Amazon, they'll do it because the ToS says they can. At the very least, try downloading and de-DRMing all the books you received from them: https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools
How does quoting a passage where they assert copyright ownership over one thing imply that they did not also assert copyright ownership over something else?

> What files should be taken down? Please provide URLs for each file, or if the entire repository, the repository’s URL. ... https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools

> the content of the repo was illegally obtained. The repo and its forks must be shut down entirely.

> I have a good faith belief that use of the copyrighted materials described above on the infringing web pages is not authorized by the copyright owner, or its agent, or the law.

> I swear, under penalty of perjury, that the information in this notification is accurate and that I am the copyright owner, or am authorized to act on behalf of the owner, of an exclusive right that is allegedly infringed.

In addition, the larger context of a DMCA Takedown Request is to assert expedient takedown of a copy of work that you have copyright ownership over. Adding a bunch of backpedaling filler to a DMCA Takedown Request does not alter its basic purpose.

edit: Sheesh it looks like Microsoft is actually encouraging claimants to write these fraudulent DMCA notices regarding circumvention technology [0]. So this is basically another extralegal "Content ID" process, and Microsoft being overzealous with takedowns makes them a terrible option for hosting your stuff. I'd love to see the law produce some justice here for once, but the real answer to these corporate-bought one-sided laws is IPFS and the like.
