Linux Kernel for Surface Devices

Language: Shell

#8 in Linux

Should have you covered.

I went the 12” MacBook route which can also install Linux.

I have a surface with Ubuntu and the Surface Kernel (https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface) , and it works really wonderfully. I will say, before installing the Surface Kernel, it was very janky.
Why make things needlessly overcomplicated? Just get a Microsoft surface and install Linux on that.

if you have an old surface tablet, this is really great with linux surface kernel

The mainline kernel works but I think the linux-surface kernel (https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface -- I misnamed it in my previous comment) should be used. I accidentally booted one of the SP3s with the mainline kernel and saw some WiFi driver problems, though I can’t say I’ve tested this extensively.
seems to have some issues, but also seems like someone is actually pushing https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface

would be interested to hear any expeiences among this crowd

I have been using this on Intel SL3 works great https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface

Also works on AMD but did get crashes sometime and sometimes need to boot into Windows to reset audio….

I wouldn't bother to style it like Windows, would do more harm than good

Microsoft Surface with Fedora GNOME is a good easy gateway to Linux, mainly because of the touchscreen

A surface pro 8 is not good enough? According to linux-surface repo (https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface) it's supported.

The ROG Flow Z13 is another candidate but it's not clear how support is. With differing reports I can find online. Also way out of budget.

Personally I'm holding on to the faint hope of Asahi Linux getting far enough and a kind soul jailbreaking an IPad Pro.

Made possible by the Linux Surface project, have been using this on Surface laptop 3s for a few years its pretty great and an active project. https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface
I have a Surface Pro 2 running with the linux-surface kernel [0]. It feels like it has some rough edges - you have to decide between having pen support or having touch screen support, and suspend can be unreliable. These issues may be fixed now. Also, I encrypted my Windows partition, and now it requires the key each time to boot up, so I recommend against doing that.

Overall, I do agree that the hardware feels quite nice, and besides those issues I listed, the Linux experience is quite good. I was very happy to not be forced to use Windows.

No, I meant ChromeOS.

There's no official, user-friendly way to install ChromiumOS yourself. A company called Neverware provides ISOs for x86 PC's but like you say the drivers are spotty and these releases lag behind ChromeOS. I'm not even sure what tablet devices are out there that you'd _want_ to install ChromiumOS on yourself? Maybe a Surface? These don't even have mainline Linux support (https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface exists though).

ChromeOS on a device like the Duet is a nice experience however, and still let's you get a Debian shell like I described.

Am currently running Ubuntu 20.04 live boot on a Surface Pro 4. Considering full install. Depth of kernel patches, firmware, knowledgeable community just devoted to the Surface family of devices frankly surprised me. Now multiply that across every device, from RPi4 to the Nintendo Switch ;)

I'd recommend the actively maintained https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface instead, which has support for newer Surface devices as well.
