What does HackerNews think of uBlock?

uBlock Origin - An efficient blocker for Chromium and Firefox. Fast and lean.

uBlock Origin, the best adblocker, and only full-featured on FF (but still better than the rest on the adtech browser):

uBlock Origin a very efficient browser extension that blocks ads and more. Been using it for years and recommend it! https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock
Although not really import but just FYI, if you mean the website https://ublockorigin.com/ it's not the homepage, it's a fan-made page. uBO does not have any servers nor websites. The "homepage" is just the github page: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock
I'm genuinly surprised that there are people on HN without a content blocker

If you don't like ads then use an ad blocker. uBlock Origin is a good one:

Gorhill has clearly said he won't accept money for this project, Cf the project Readme : https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock

I wish I could repay in some way the happiness this extension is bringing me though

WebKit may be open source, but Safari is not. The interface to access Safari's content blocking settings and the platform on which Safari content blocking extensions are built are both closed source, so your FUD about "intercepting web traffic" would be more appropriately directed at Safari than at uBlock Origin.

Yes, I have personally downloaded the uBlock Origin source code. I have also reviewed the code and suggested improvements. However, I don't even need to download the code to realize the benefits of uBlock Origin being free and open source. Even if I hadn't downloaded the code, there are many other users and contributors who have reviewed the code, and you can confirm this by taking a simple look at the activity in the GitHub repos.

> So I think it's good advice that maintainers should use stalebot, because the alternative is a dead project.

Why not just close issue tracker? Or autoclose everything immediately rather than remind people weeks/months later about their bug, just to discover that they got "pranked"?

Or let issues pile up? Or have separate garbage dump issue tracker? Done by https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock

Fork - a fast and friendly git client https://fork.dev/

uBlock Origin - An efficient blocker add-on for various browsers. Fast, potent, and lean. https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock

Those tools made my life so much easier. Can't recommend them enough.

Just a happy user and not affiliated

> Without the preset lists of filters, this extension is nothing. So if ever you really do want to contribute something, think about the people working hard to maintain the filter lists you are using, which were made available to use by all for free.

For context, gorhill is the veteran author of original uBlock, and current uBlock Origin. He knows what he's talking about as author, maintainer and one of the community leader/voice of probably the single best and only conflict-of-interest-free ad-blocker currently in existence.

His past post[0] was reposted and generated quite a discussion on HN [1].

For further details on why uBO is conflict free, this is the README.md on github repo[2] says:

---

Free. Open source. For users by users. No donations sought.

Better option - uBlock Orgin https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/ - saves me 100's of megabytes of data every day. I am sure it will also soon block ads on the streaming platforms too (provided you don't use Chrome or stream through apps).
Detect, or block? There are a few options for blocking, if you run uBlock Origin[1] the Resource Abuse list covers many.

Amended. The Github repo is named `uBlock`[0] so there will be confusion for people about which is the 'best' version (Hint: it's uBo)

Pi-Hole and uBO are enough by themselves.

> To benefit from uBlock Origin's higher efficiency, it's advised that you don't use other content blockers at the same time (such as Adblock Plus, AdBlock). uBlock Origin will do as well or better than most popular ad blockers. Other blockers can also prevent uBlock Origin's privacy or anti-blocker-defusing features from working properly.
